Yumi Kodama

Vice President for Advocacy

Yumi Kodama is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Her research interests lie in medieval women’s history. Her current project explores the legitimacy of medieval Japanese women’s political rule, while also drawing comparisons with cases from Spain, China, and England. We learn from history, right?

Since her first year at Penn, Yumi has been actively involved in student government. In her first year, she served as both a department representative and a representative of the School of Arts and Sciences, and she also joined the Equity and Access Committee. In her second year, she served as Vice President of Policy for the School of Arts and Sciences Government. In her third year, she served as a deputy chair of the Research Council.

Yumi loves meeting and interacting with people and learning about different cultures. She loves animals from the bottom of her heart and hates lies. She also sincerely cares about other people’s feelings.

This year, the Advocacy Division is a great team. They work to address whatever graduate students want, need, or struggle with. With the current political situation, the Advocacy Division is focusing heavily on international student issues.
